Q & A with Cynthia Rowley

Q: What were your inspirations behind the creation of the fragrances?
A: “The idea was to create two fragrances, one for mother and one for daughter, intended to work together or independently.”

Q: What attracted you to the idea of creating fragrances for mothers and daughters?
A: “I remember that my mom wore a distinctive fragrance on big occasions when I was a kid. She used to spritz a little on me before she went out for the night, and I always associated it with something special – even when I stayed home with the babysitter. It was a bonding experience. I wanted to create something to share with my own daughters and for others to share with all of the women in their life – grandmothers, grand-daughters, aunts, nieces, sisters, and more.”

Q: Why did you decide to name the fragrances Flower and Petal?
A: “I love the natural beauty, optimism, and femininity that a flower embodies. Also the assocation with love…’She loves me, she loves me, she loves me!’”

Q: What do the fragrances smell like?
A: Flower and Petal both have their own personality, but they are both very feminine and beautiful. Flower is a little more flirtatious and sophisticated and Petal more innocent and carefree.

Meet the Perfumers

Frank Völkl

Born in Bonn, Germany, Frank spent his teenage years in Paris. He became captivated by the perfumes his mother selected in a shop on the rue de Rivoli. During these formative years, Frank learned about the ISIPCA School of perfumery in Versailles, France, which he attended after earning a degree in chemistry. After graduating in1991, he studied under 2 perfumers that he considers “mentors.”
A New York resident since 1995, Frank is fascinated by the emotional power of an urban setting such as Manhattan. He finds inspiration in the city’s juxtaposition of the old and the new. It is a motif that he tries to carry over to his fragrances, which he strives to keep simple and uncluttered: “Every detail must have an absolute reason to be there,” he says. “The challenge is to balance ingredients in a perfect way.” He favors fragrances that are mystical and rich, such as voluptuous florals and amber notes.*

Richard Herpin

Growing up in the south of France near Grasse — the heart of the perfume industry — he worked alongside his father, a restoration expert and antiques dealer. From him, Richard learned how to peel back the layers of varnish and wood, restoring and recreating the essential materials and character of each piece. An internship in the antiques department at Asprey in London led Richard to consider becoming an interior designer, but he changed his mind after landing another internship with perfumer Pierre Bourdon.
In New York he can draw on his European roots and enjoy the creative freedom that the city offers – in addition to being a perfumer, he is an amateur photographer and self-taught musician. Ultimately, he feels that perfumery is similar to the world of antiques, because noble materials, symmetry and craftsmanship count above all – and because the artisans, like perfumers, put their soul into their art.*

Q&A with Frank and Richard

Q: What was it like working with Cynthia Rowley on these fragrances?
A: She was really hands-on and had a good nose and strong opinions – making her instrumental to the development process. The end result is really beautiful and really captures her personality in a bottle.*

Q: How were the fragrance notes chosen for each fragrance?
A: Flower is a flirtatious, woody spice featuring a very wearable lily fragrance combined with citrus, violet leaves, freesia. The result is a fragrance that is both sophisticated and playful – much like Cynthia herself. When creating Petal, we wanted to pull a note from the mother fragrance and create a lighter, more innocent fragrance. Both Cynthia and her daughter loved Lily of the Valley. It was the perfect note to be the centerpiece of the fragrance.*
